TOOLS:               Spriter Pro, Photoshop

TIME FRAME:         5 weeks

TEAM SIZE:           5 (2 Programmer, 3 Artists)

PLATFORM:           PC and Android

MY ROLE:

My task in this game was mainly to create all the different animations and effects. In addition, I was responsible for texturing various character cards and speacial cards.

WHAT IS MIXED-UP TALES?

The project requirements was to develop a simple and fast digital card game with an analog prototype in 5 weeks. The setting and the way of implementation was freely selectable. Our goal was to create a turn based card game, which will be digitized as a hot seat game. We chose the setting 'good versus evil' with various fairytale-characters. The good characters are shown in green and the bad ones in red. Mixed-Up Tales is a 2D card game for two players with a simple three-wins-principle. The inspiration was the game 'tic tac toe' but we expanded it with various special cards. The cards are drawn from a randomly generated deck. Every player has 15 character cards, that are used as point cards, 15 blank cards and 12 different special cards. At the beginning of each turn, the player has 3 cards in his hand. He decides whether he wants to place a point card, block the opponent or influence the playing field with special cards.

THE DESIGN PROCESS:

The individual cards and their textures and animations was one of the biggest parts of the project. Besides the facts mentioned before, it was an essential component of the process to design the playfield background, the main menu, the handcards panel, the transparent card and the error sprite. During the project, we had the subject animation. Therefore, it fit well to implement various animations into the game. These include, for example, the cleaning Cinderella, the laughing Wicked Witch, the floating Tinkerbell or Captain Hook holding up his sword in a boastful manner. Another essential part of the game were the various effects that appear as a result of using a special card.

This served as an understanding of the specific cards and how I animated them at the beginning of my animation course:

  • Cancercard (Cinderella): turns all cards in its line and column into blank cards

  • Burncard (Wicked Witch): destroys one adjacent card and itself

  • Anchorcard (Captain Hook): creates a new starting point, max. 2 fields away from other cards

  • Changecard (Cheshire Cat): turns an opponent’s point card into a blank card

  • Doublecard (Fairy Godmother): allows the player to place a point card and a blank card in one turn

  • Shufflecard (Ugly Duckling): switches places of a player’s card with an opponent’s if they’re adjacent

  • Deletecard (Queen of Hearts): can destroy any card from the playfield

  • Infernocard (Jabberwocky): clears 3 fields in any straight direction, starting from its position

  • Exhangecard (Kay): exchanges the players deck and handcards with his opponent’s

  • Discardcard (Tinkerbell): all special cards on the opponent’s hand are removed

  • Restartcard (Wolf): all cards are removed from the playfield

  • Blockcard (Giant): blocks a field and reserves an empty adjacent field for the next turn
